WELCOME DEXTER!
5-year-old Dexter came to rescue when his owner’s living situation changed, and he was no longer able to care of him. Weighing in at a healthy 32 lbs., Dexter is a big handsome brindle boy. We think he is mixed with another breed though no DNA test has been done. This sweet as can be boy has settled into his foster home quickly and gets along well with his foster canine siblings. Dexter has not been cat tested while in foster care, but his surrendering owner tells us he is good with them.
Dexter is good with kids and adults alike. He loves to cuddle up next to you, but he is not 100% couch potato. He enjoys playing in his foster mom’s yard and going for walks and he possesses very good leash manners. He has not shown a lot of interest in toys but loves a good bully stick or other similar chewy. He also really enjoys playing with other dogs. His foster bestie is Brady the dachshund. They could wrestle for hours! Dexter would love a playmate in his forever home.
Dexter is house trained but not crate trained. He knows the basic command of sit. He does not seem overly interested in leaving out the door with his foster mom, but if a rabbit or squirrel was in sight he'd probably go for it. As always, we will expect a secured plan to keep him from getting loose. He needs work on his re-call as well.
Dexter was left home for longer than 8 hour stretches in his previous home, but we will be seeking someone out of the home no longer than 8 hours. When you do arrive home, you'll find Dexter lounging on the couch waiting for you. He has not demonstrated any destructive behaviors in his foster home. Come bedtime, he wants to cuddle up in bed with his humans. That time will be especially important if he does spend any extended periods without the company of his people. A fenced yard is not a requirement, however, Dexter will require regular walks for exercise and to keep him fit.
Dexter can be slightly anxious in the car at first but once adjusted, he will settle down and enjoy the ride. We believe with more trips to happy places; Dexter will look forward to his adventures in the car.
Dexter recently had a nail trim, the quicks of his nails are long, so he will need someone committed to regular nail trims to help the quick recede to get his nails to a more comfortable length. Dexter is neutered, up to date on vaccines, flea and tick and heartworm preventive. He tested positive for Lyme disease when checked by our vet and is currently receiving a course of Doxycycline. Dexter's records indicate some history of skin allergies, but he has been well thus far in foster care. He also had a hemangiosarcoma removed from his abdomen in April of 2025. There were clean margins with no lymphatic involvement seen.
Lastly, Dexter is a vocal boy. An excellent watch dog! If he hears or sees something that catches his curiosity, he is sure to let you know. He is a friendly neighbor and loves to shout out good morning, good afternoon and good evening. Because of this, Dexter may not be the best fit for someone in an apartment or condo setting with shared walls.
DEXTER'S ADOPTION FEE: $500.00 based on age ($600.00) minus $100.00 for presumed mixed breed
