Meet Donnie!
At 11 years young, and with his neuter surgery behind him, Donnie is ready to kick back and enjoy his golden years in style. This handsome guy with the temperament of a teddy bear has perfected the art of napping, and appreciates a nice soft bed, anywhere in the vicinity of his person. He believes every good day should start with some belly rubs, followed by a tasty breakfast and a nice slow walk to check on how things went in the neighborhood overnight.
Donnie loves to chill out to some soft music and a snack of cheese or peanut butter, his 2 favorite snacks. He loves all strangers and makes friends with everyone he meets. He did have some issues with the dog in his first foster home, now that he is in a home with no other pets, he seems much happier, so we will be seeking a family where Donnie can be the one and only. He is totally potty trained and will hang out in his crate happily. His safe space. His new family should expect some episodes of marking as he settles in, but after that he should do very well as he has in his foster home. He does exhibit some separation anxiety as evidenced by crying when his family is leaving. If crated, he settles quickly. Donnie does take medication for anxiety. He is down to ½ tab of trazadone in the morning which has been working well on keeping him settled. He also has some allergies. Donnie had a history of Atopy at the base of his tail and in his toe webs. His skin has improved, but he still has itchiness. Cytopoint injections have been effective in tamping down these episodes, but his new family may want to pursue other avenues to help Donnie manage his allergies. The cost of his medications runs about $50/ month and may vary depending on your local veterinary costs.
Donnie knows sit and comes when he is called. He is not a big fan of having his nails trimmed. Shocking, we know. He does pretty well with all other grooming as long as all 4 paws are on the floor. He can be anxious with new situations, but once he knows he is safe, he settles in. He also needs a moment to settle down when riding in the car. He'd love nothing more than a spot on your couch and to just cuddle and hang out together.
Prior to his neuter, Donnie had developed some habitual rubbing of his penis which caused rawness to the area. We are hoping this behavior subsides, but it is something that is noted in his history. Continuing to work with him through distraction and providing enrichment activities will help Donnie to learn new ways to "self sooth". He has some low vision and depth perception problems, so he does not do well with stairs. Single floor living and/or gated stairways with owner capable and willing to carry him up and down flights will be best. Donnie weighs about 17 lbs.
Donnie is a sweet, cuddly little man who really hit a rough patch in life when he lost his person. If you love a senior pug and find fulfillment in helping a dog overcome trauma and move on to live a wonderful life, please consider applying for Donnie. We do not think you will be disappointed.
ADOPTION FEE: $450.00 based on his age plus neuter fee. $300.00 + $150.00 = $450.00
